This course delves into the critical significance of materials and methodologies in the design and construction of buildings. It emphasizes the essential relationship between materials, systems, structural integrity, and environmental performance. Students will gain a foundational understanding of how materiality influences construction systems and techniques, including the manufacturing process, modular forms, dimensions, and intrinsic qualities that impact design decisions.

Spanning four modules over 11 months, students will explore various building systems and their role in expressing design concepts. Through the analysis of precedent projects driven by material logics and systems, students will grasp the practical application of these concepts. Hands-on experience with building materials such as concrete, wood, and metal will deepen their understanding of material properties. Beginning with initial planning stages, students will develop architectural projects with a focus on conceptual design, building technologies, and digital fabrication. The course emphasizes the fusion of art and practice in architecture, fostering critical design thinking, technical expertise, and artistic vision. Using tools like AutoCAD, students will design and prototype their projects, incorporating rapid prototyping techniques like 3D printing and laser cutting.

Students will demonstrate their understanding of surface and lighting design, energy-efficient systems, structural integrity, services, and construction methodologies through their projects. Sustainable practices and project management will be explored using advanced software and design applications. The program also delves into computational design strategies, advanced surface and lighting techniques, energy-efficient building components, and sustainable materials. By the program’s end, students will have a comprehensive understanding of architecture and design, equipped with the skills and knowledge to navigate the evolving landscape of these disciplines.
